10 of the Weirdest World Records Ever Set

Piercings World Record

Setting a world record is always a great achievement, but some people have gone well beyond the norm by setting records in some highly unusual categories. Despite the wackiness of these unusual records, the people who set them put in a lot of time and effort to leave their marks on history. Some of these individuals have even gone on to receive a level of fame by doing things that most people can’t even imagine doing.

Here are 10 of the weirdest (and admirable) world records that have ever been set.

1. Most Spoons on a Human Body

Etibar Elchiyev set a world record in December 2011 and became the first person from Azerbaijan to enter the Guinness Book of World Records by having 53 metal spoons stuck to his body. He claims that he was able to hold the spoons in place with the special magnetic powers that he allegedly possesses. The spoons were stuck to his bare skin on his chest and shoulders and held in place like magic without having to use his hands or any other body parts.

2. Largest Chinese Fried Rice Meal

Chinese chefs in Costa Rica set a record in 2013 by preparing a massive helping of a fried rice dish to celebrate the Chinese New Year among the local Chinese community. A British representative of the Guinness World Records weighed the massive portion, which came in at 1,345 kilograms (just under 2,000 pounds). In addition to more than 1,600 pounds of rice, the meal contained around 440 pounds of chicken and 45 pounds of sausage along with chopped onions, sweet peppers and other ingredients to give the dish a heartier flavor.

3.  Most Simultaneous Facials

Who knew that setting a world record could feel so relaxing? In Jinan, China, a world record was set in 2015 for the most facials ever given at the same time. A group of 1,000 women crowded into a football stadium to receive the facial treatments simultaneously by a massive team of trained aestheticians. Each facial session lasted 30 minutes and included skin hydration and exfoliation treatments along with a massage. The number of participants shattered the previous record of 287, which had been set in India the previous year.

4. Most Pierced Woman

The honor for most piercings on a woman’s body goes to Elaine Davidson, who is originally from Brazil but now resides in Edinburgh, Scotland. She first set the world record after being examined by a Guinness World Record official, who counted 462 piercings (including 192 facial piercings). She has since grown that record to more than 6,900 body piercings, some of which are located in the exterior parts of certain body orifices. Elaine Davidson makes regular appearances around Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and welcomes people who are passing by to take pictures with her.

5. Fastest Marathon in a Full-Body Animal Costume (Female)

The London Marathon is known to attract several participants each year who try to set new world records in some of the wackiest categories. Jessica Anderson was able to accomplish this feat in 2019 by becoming the fastest woman ever to complete a marathon while wearing a full-body animal costume. She chose the costume of a panda bear for good luck and was able to finish the marathon in a time of 3:48:32.

6. Most Continuous Spin Rotations on One Foot

Swiss figure skater Lucinda Ruh, who is often referred to as the “Queen of Spin” for her uncanny spinning abilities on the ice, set a world record in April 2003 by completing 105 continuous rotations on one foot while spinning. What’s even more impressive is that she accomplished the feat on a windy morning at the outdoor ice rink at Rockefeller Plaza during live filming of NBC’s Today Show. Lucinda shattered the previous world record of 60 rotations held by British figure skater Neil Wilson.

7. Human Bed of Nail Sandwich with the Most Layers

In likely one of the most painful world records ever set, Vispy Kharadi teamed with other martial arts experts to create a nine-layer human sandwich that included beds of nails. Each person had to lie on a bed of nails with another nail bed that covered their chest and abdomen to support the remaining layers (even the top man had this upper bed of nails to make the challenge fairer). The record was set in October 2019 in Ahmedabad, India.

8. World’s Largest Rubber Duck Collection

Charlotte Lee began collecting rubber ducks in 1996 and first set the world record in 2003 with a collection of 1,439. She has since shattered her own record by growing her collection to include more than 9,000 rubber ducks. Her collection includes plain rubber ducks along with ducks that are dressed in sports uniforms and costumes. Some of the ducks in her collection also date back to the 1930s. She has been able to get many of her ducks from stores, flea markets and art museums as well as by ordering them online from international locations.

9. World’s Largest Pizza

Even the most avid pizza fans would have trouble sinking their teeth into the world’s largest pie. Measuring a total surface area of 13,580.28 square feet, the biggest pizza ever known to man was created in December 2012 in Rome, Italy (how appropriate). Pizza chefs Dovilio Nardi, Andrea Mannocchi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi and Matteo Giannotte all invested their efforts and talents into making the gigantic pizza that set the record. They named their creation “Ottavia” (or “eighth son”) in honor of Octavian Augustus, the ancient Roman emperor and warrior who led his army several times to victory. The fact that the pizza was made to be entirely gluten-free is another remarkable accomplishment.

10. Most Toothpicks in a Beard

If you’ve ever wondered who set the world record for sticking the most toothpicks into their beard (and who hasn’t?), the answer is Joel Strasser of Lacey, WA. In July 2018, Joel set his record by sticking 3,500 individual toothpicks into his beard. Joel invested 3 hours and 13 minutes of his time to intertwine all the toothpicks into the hair of his beard and managed to keep them all in long enough to set his record. Joel credited his accomplishment to technique and not the size of his beard, and he claimed to weave the toothpicks into the hair in a way that’s similar to how a bird builds a nest.
